About our school

Lessons

The main aim of the German Saturday School is to give children confidence in speaking and using the German language -- and for them to have fun at the same time!

The school is designed for children from German-speaking families who are being brought up bilingually, which means the school is not really aimed at children who are learning German as a foreign language. However, this might change in the future. We will try and find interesting and exciting ways to use the German language in England and plan to address topics that are specific to German-speaking countries.

Objectives:

  • Enjoying German as a second language
  • Contact with bilingual children
  • Learning about traditions, customs, personalities, geography and history of German-speaking countries
  • Vocabulary and grammar
  • Enjoying interesting projects
  • Learning to read and write in German

We use material from German kindergartens and primary schools, as well as lots of songs, games, sketches and creative activities. Traditions from our native countries, such as celebrating Advent, painting Easter Eggs and making lanterns for St Martin's Day, are also followed.

Lessons:

  • Action- and project-oriented
  • German as a second language (not as a foreign lanuage at the moment!)
  • Focusing on vocabulary rather than grammar
